Dragontribes

The Dragontribes were the earliest groupings of humans, first developing during the Age of War. Each tribe was ruled by a dragon and perhaps its family and they, in turn, were worshiped as totems by the tribes. As such, the tribes differed greatly in respect to appearance, attitude and culture depending on the color of their totem dragon.

Every tribe claimed a swath of the land as its own hunting grounds, regardless of any intersection with lands claimed by other sentient species, including those from other tribes. A tribe was comprised of several different clans, each of which was led by its own chieftain. In times of invasion, a Great Chief was selected from among these leaders, to serve as the ruler of the people.

The dragons showed the tribes how to fashion weapons, build huts and weave clothing. The tribes came into contact with the then numerous orcs frequently, though rarely in an antagonistic manner.

When the dragons abandoned the humans, they sought cultural fulfillment with themselves and created the beginning of human civilization.

Today, some dragontribes still exist, though in a much more advanced way. Found in eastern Vatharond and beyond the Wyrmspires, the remaining dragontribes have little contact with Norans.

The Vathroni clan or sibbja is a social group based on common descent or on the formal acceptance into the group at a matterstead. A clan is bound by a treaty or oath, not primarily restricted to blood relations. The clan is a cognatic, extended family unit, analogous to the dwarven clans.

The average sibbja rarely contains more than 50 families.

Gaining most of the traditions of the dragontribes of old, the clan is the primary force of security in Vathroni society as the clansmen are obliged by honor to avenge one another. The Vathroni clan is not tied to a certain territory in the same way as a dwarven clan, where the clanfather owns the territory. The land of the Vathroni clan was owned by the individuals who had close neighbors from other clans. The name of the clan was derived from that of its ancestor, often with the addition of an -ung or -ing ending.

As the dragontribes gradually faded from prominence, the concept of the clan lost its relevance for urban commoner. However, rustic farmers, traditionalists as well as royalty and nobility, it remained in use as the name for line and dynasty.

Most noble families of southern Vatharond can trace their heritage back to the Blue Dragon Clan. Whereas many houses in the north are varied clans.

While they feared magic, they respected the powers of each tribe's shamans. They believed their otherworldly abilities originated from their deceased ancestors. They held their dead brethren in high regard, and interred them in cairns scattered across the land.

Each tribe maintained an ancestral mound and revered their own totemic spirit beast.

All tribes were typically known to celebrate with a day and night feast for the spring equinox, summer solstice, and winter solstice. These celebrations were known as the "Birthing", "Fullness", and "Darking", respectively. Around this time a tribe's shaman would also seek out guidance regarding the coming months from their respective totem.

But the autumnal equinox was considered the holiest of days. This was when all the tribes would gather together for a celebration they called Runemeet. On this day the tribes would set policies, venerate their gods, perform marriages, mourn deaths, initiate tribesmen as shamans, and perform a rite of passage known as the Runehunt.
