A chain of torment is a metaphysical manifestation of a connection between two entities when one has gained control of another's truename. Each chain is unique and is difficult to break.

When Tugarin Zmeja tricked Merrium Kraemer into exposing his truename and lashed a chain of torment onto him, another chain unexpectedly appeared around Ranita Riverchild's neck, illustrating that they both have the same truename.
