The Broken Fang Tribe (goblin Thyer Dhëmb) is a large tribe of hobgoblins located on the Devil's Hand Peninsula. They are one of their fiercest of all goblin tribes and are said to have infernal heritage. Whether or not this is true, they are enemies of devils.

They often hire themselves as mercenaries. They are without fear and will fight any foe, save themselves. They hold absolute loyalty to their own tribe.

The largest tribe of the hobgoblins, the Broken Fangs are descended from the traditional rulers and war leaders of Kelevor. These noble hobgoblins are known for their physical prowess, courage, and honor. Some have even stated they are the most comely of all the tribes.

Strangely, many younger members of the tribe suffer from odd quirks — absent-mindedness, mild hallucinations, somnambulism — nothing overtly psychotic, but noticeable nevertheless. The powerful history of the tribe lays a heavy burden on the shoulders of its members, and many are too proud to ask for help. The plight of the Broken Fangs epitomizes the tragedy of the hobgoblin decline in general. Although proud and outwardly strong, the Fangs suffer from diseases of the spirit and mind. Inbreeding and Mërzi (a overwhelming nihilistic gloom some hobgoblins face) have weakened the foundation of the tribe, and although they strive to set things right, it may already be too late.

Although the tribe (according to their own legends) has the divine mandate to rule their brethren, many Fangs have found their attitudes often met with ridicule and scorn by the other tribes. As such, the Tribe is forced to rely on realpolitik, managing to preserve whatever influence is left to them in the modern world and forging alliances with the other tribes to secure themselves against rivals.

History

Myth says that the goblin god Arak rescued Yunis and Helos from death and was rewarded with the signature red skin of the Broken Fangs. Arak then pledged himself to Helos.

The Broken Fangs warred with the Yuan-ti in ancient times. Many lost and honored houses fell during this time. It is said that the Warlord of the tribe turned against Helos during the war and balance was only restored when he stepped down.

They were mercenaries during the Aquarian Empire. They fought in the front lines against the vampires during the early years of the empire. They also fought a war against the Drerihije tribe on behalf of the empire. All this guarenteed their tribe a glorious position in the Aquarian armies.

Organization

Originally, the Tribe was divided into 13 Houses (Dinasti) that formed back in the time of Kelevor. Each house began with a mighty ancestor. It often took many years for each house to declare itself as such, under the leadership of a descendant of one of the original 13 Warlords.

Now, however, only seven of the houses remained. Each Broken Fang belongs to one of the remaining Houses. Each house has a single Chief, the ruler of that house’s territory, who in turn answeres to the Warlord. Each Chief is served by various captains, who are usually elders in their own right or heirs to the throne. There are also stewards, who aid them coordinating squads in their territory. Of course, each squad has its own leader, who may or may not bear an additional title of some sort.

Culture

Most goblins hold Yunis and Helos as their patron deities, emphasizing their power over life and death.

There are two major factions of thought in the tribe:

  • Royalists - The tribe's traditionalists, the Royalists wish to return the "good old days" where all other tribes bent the knee to the Broken Fangs. For obvious reasons, the Royalists do not get along well with the Renewalists.
  • Renewalists - Home to the tribe's "young Turks", the Renewalists advocate the integration of new ideas and, perhaps, new blood into the tribe, to stave off stagnation. For obvious reasons, the Renewalists do not get along well with the Royalists.
